Morphology (الصرف) is the study of the structure of words, enabling you identify root letters and patterns. By the end of the course one will develop an in-depth understanding of verb and noun structures and how to derive words from a 3 letter root. Many examples will be used from the Quran to allow one to taste some of its linguistic beauty.

Course Modules
Module 1: An Introduction to the Science of Morphology
Introduction to base letters and word derivation, Study methods for Sarf, Overview of verbs (person, gender, number) and conjugation tables, Discussion on transitive/intransitive verbs, active/passive verbs. Arabic terminology required for Morphology.
Module 2: Past Tense Verbs
Introduction to passive voice and negation of verbs, Examination of near and distant past tense, Detailed discussion on the subject of verbs, Introduction to present tense verbs, Usage of the Hans Wehr Dictionary for looking up verbs.
Module 3: Present Tense Verbs
The three main meanings for present tense verbs, Construction of present tense verbs from past tense verbs, Detailed discussion on the subject of present tense verbs, Introduction to negation and future particles associated with present tense verbs, Examination of verbs in Surat Al Burooj (Surah 85).
Module 4: Categories of Triliteral Verbs and Command Verbs
Six categories of triliteral verbs, Vocabulary building techniques, Construction and examples of command verbs in the Quran.
Module 5: Derived and Non-Derived Nouns, Active and Passive Participles
Verbal nouns and types of derived nouns, Construction of active and passive participles, Linguistic discussions on verbs and nouns, and their patterns.
Module 6: The Masdar (Verbal Noun) and Linguistic Aspects of the Verb
Identification and discussion of the masdar, Examination of Basra and Kufan school perspectives, Linguistic usages of different verb types.
Module 7: Introduction to Unsound and Weak Verbs, the Double Consonant Verb
Terminology related to sound, unsound, and weak verbs, Detailed examination of double consonant verbs, Conjugation of past, present, and command forms.
Module 8: The Verb Containing a Hamza
Detailed examination of verbs containing Hamza, Conjugation rules and exceptions for these verbs.
